Bill,
I too thought I'd read this but... The paragraph where Alastair talks about his reading of Game of Kings gave me the shivers. Genius. "Dazed and triumphant" Dorothy Dunnett's books leave you with that feeling even if you're not married to her. She inspires us with great respect for our humanity. There is such joy to be found in her books and in finding the Dorothy Dunnett community to share that joy with.

Hi Bill,
I finally read your talk; it was so very moving. Thank you for posting it for us. I can't ever explain the pull of Dorothy Dunnett to my friends, but you have done it perfectly. What a truly exceptional woman she was!

I thoroughly enjoyed your talk, Bill. Like a previous commenter (is that a word? :) ) I discovered Lymond early and followed each book as it was published - and onto Niccolo - never realizing that Ms. Dunnett visited the US!! I could have been in Philly if I'd known.
I continue to recommend her to any and everyone who appreciates history in general and British history in particular. I've registered for LeSpit in Oct, but since I just was laid off (yes, the US economy is still struggling) I'm not sure I can actually attend. I would love to meet all the DDRA and follow in Dorothy's footsteps.

Thanks to all of you for the lovely comments - much appreciated!

Chris, if that doesn't work on your husband, point him at Linda Gillard's description of Game of Kings.

Bonnie, I wish I could remember who it was but it's a long time ago. While I still have most of my email archives from about 1997 onwards those first couple of years were on various older and long gone email programs, and of course there's been the demise of Thins and a number of changes of computer since then too. I think I did once manage to do a textfile dump of the old messages so I might still have them somewhere but not immediately to hand. If I ever get time I'll try to dig them out and see who it was. I hope she's still around and reading.

As for my writing, thank you, but then I had the very best teacher possible. As I said after reading that King Hereafter extract, I would give anything to have written that.

Bill, I wish I had been there. Would love to meet you some day.

Who was the lady who contacted you and then told her friends on the message board about Thin's?

This is a beautiful transcript. You write beautifully, and I am certain you make it come alive when you speak.
